Abstract
This article examines the influential role of culture as a construct within German educational discourse. It analyses conceptual foundations, the role of the nation-state, and the evolution from “pedagogy for foreigners” to contemporary migration and difference-sensitive pedagogy. The aim is to outline the professionalisation of teacher training within an increasingly pluralistic society.

Effectiveness of a self-compassionate writing intervention. Findings from an experi-mental study

Schwarzer, N.-H., Dietrich, L., König, S. & Kieschke, U. (2026). Effectiveness of a self-compassionate writing intervention. Findings from an experi-mental study. Current Psychology, 2026(45).

Abstract
Background: Self-compassionate writing may offer a promising approach for integrating brief mental health interventions into the daily routines of student teachers. It may support them in them in recognizing, reevaluating and coping with their worries and fears. The current study: The aim of the current study was to assess the effectiveness of a 20-minute self-compassionate writing intervention. It was hypothesized that student teachers of the intervention group would report higher well-being, lower symptom distress, and a better mood compared to the participants in two control groups. Methods: Data were collected using an experimental design, with 241 student teachers randomly assigned to one of three groups: an experimental group and two control groups. Well-being, symptom distress, and negative mood were measured before and after the intervention through questionnaires. No manipulation check was included. The hypotheses were tested using mixed-design ANOVAs. Results: Results indicate that a 20-minute self-compassionate writing intervention was associated with small to medium short-term improvements in self-reported well-being and current mood. Conversely, the self-compassionate writing intervention did not show an association with changes in symptom distress. Discussion: When incorporated into regular routines, self-compassionate writing interventions may support well-being and current mood in student teachers and can be implemented in teacher education with minimal effort.

Kids’ motives of sport participation and the image of handball–a qualitative approach to increasing the number of child members

König, S., Uhl, E. & Braun, A. (2026). Kids’ motives of sport participation and the image of handball–a qualitative approach to increasing the number of child members. Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, 8.

Abstract
Membership in the German Handball Federation (DHB) has been declining across all age groups for around 10 years, at least until 2022. Specifically, this trend is reflected in a loss of almost 30% of teams in the younger age groups and even in one third in the age groups of juveniles. For handball in Germany, this is a worrying development. It raises questions about both reasons for this development and how a leading sport association should tackle the problem to ensure a sustainable future of its own sport. These demands were explored in a cooperative project between Weingarten University of Education and the German Sport University Cologne in collaboration with the German Handball Federation. Our common theoretical basis was the motive-image-fit approach. It assumes that children and young people only turn to handball or remain loyal to it if the subjective perception of this sport (image) and the motive structures of the children and young people match. Against this backdrop, two research questions took center stage aiming at children's motives for playing handball and identifying their image of handball. To answer these research questions, an exploratory sequential mixed methods study (QUAL ⇨ QUAN) has been implemented, the first part of which we report on here. The Weingarten research group conducted 35 semi-standardized interviews with 8–12-year-old children. The analysis was carried out using the qualitative content analysis method and MAXQDA 24 software, which led to the development of a deductive-inductive category system. On the basis of 35 interviews we found out that handball is an inspiring, success-oriented and community-oriented sport for many children. In addition, it promotes self-efficacy and team spirit. While the sport is perceived as dynamic by active players, children who do not actively play handball describe it as challenging due to a complex set of rules or the pressure to perform. Thus, our findings contribute to a differentiated view of the motive-image fit and can also contribute to the sustainable development of handball as a sport.

Abstract
This study examines how the “Time and Clock” app with synchronized multiple representations supports children’s conceptual understanding of time and develops pre-service teachers’ mathematics-didactic insights through defamiliarization. The app integrates decomposed, dynamically linked displays (analog clock, separate hour and minute clocks with proportional color bars, digital display) to make implicit time relationships explicitly explorable. For teacher education, an unfamiliar decimal-time version (base-10 instead of 12/60) creates authentic cognitive challenges, enabling future teachers to experience difficulties similar to those of learners and to recognize the value of integrated representations. In a three-step design, pre-service teachers explored two versions of a decimal clock individually, explained their observations to peers, and reflected on implications for time instruction. Analysis of written documents, video transcripts, and reflections shows that (i) defamiliarization fostered empathy for students’ struggles in learning time concepts, (ii) participants developed a deeper understanding of how networking representations supports learning, and (iii) didactic and pedagogical insights for instruction emerged.

‘Belief in education and yourself’ Cross-national intrinsic career and study choice motives of student teachers using the examples of Brazil, Chile, Germany and Japan

Steger, A., Schieferdecker, R. & Lang, S. (2025). ‘Belief in education and yourself’ Cross-national intrinsic career and study choice motives of student teachers using the examples of Brazil, Chile, Germany and Japan. Journal of Research in Social Sciences & Language (JSSAL, 2025.

Abstract
In light of the global teacher shortage (UNESCO, 2019), the question of the motives for choosing a career in teaching is also becoming increasingly relevant internationally. Previous studies emphasize the central role of intrinsic motives in this decision. This study explores the intrinsic motives of student teachers from four international university locations using biographical texts collected by means of online questionnaires. The data were analysed using a qualitative content analysis. The exploratory study shows that similar intrinsic career and study choice motives exist across countries and can be described in a differentiated way. Partial results suggest that 'belief in education' is a central motive, although this varies according to context. The influence of biographical experiences with one's own teachers and the resulting desire to do better also emerged as a universal motive for choosing teaching as a career.

Wunsch nach Mitgestaltung als Berufswahlmotiv – eine qualitative Analyse zur Berufswahl von Studierenden der Sonderpädagogik

Schieferdecker, R., Frirdich, G., Sansour, T. & Dumbacher, V. (2025). Wunsch nach Mitgestaltung als Berufswahlmotiv – eine qualitative Analyse zur Berufswahl von Studierenden der Sonderpädagogik. Qualifizierung für Inklusion (Qfl), 2025.

Abstract

Interplay of intrinsic motivation and well-being at school.

Grassinger, R., Landberg, M., Määttä, S., Vasalampi, K. & Bieg, S. (2024). Interplay of intrinsic motivation and well-being at school. Motivation and Emotion, 2024.

Abstract
Feeling well at school is crucial for both young people’s healthy self-development and their intrinsic learning motivation.
Both concepts, subjective well-being and intrinsic motivation, are central to self-determination theory, but their reciprocal
relationship is not studied very well. We hypothesized that the concepts affect each other directly: Students who are intrinsically
motivated feel well at school due to positive emotions and the strive for understanding the learning content, which is
an intrinsic motivation immanent. Beyond, students who feel well at school are intrinsically motivated, because subjective
well-being represents an intrinsic value of the learning situation. This hypothesis is tested using a sample of 773 secondary
school students (mean age: 12.7 years, SD = 1.8), who were answering questionnaires at the beginning (T1), at mid (T2)
and at the end (T3) of a school year. The data were analyzed using a cross-lagged panel model. The results gave evidence
on cross-lagged effects and an indirect effect from subjective well-being to intrinsic motivation to subjective well-being.

Humor in university teaching: Role of teachers’ achievement goals and self-efficacy for their use of content-related humor.

Daumiller, M., Bieg, S., Dickhäuser, O. & Dresel, M. (2019). Humor in university teaching: Role of teachers’ achievement goals and self-efficacy for their use of content-related humor. Studies in Higher Education, 2019.

Abstract
Teachers’ content-related humor matters for the quality of higher
education. However, little is known about the circumstances under which teachers use it. From a socio-cognitive perspective, teachers’ achievement goals and self-efficacy appear to be relevant personal precursors. We investigated their effects on content-related humor in
two studies. In Study 1, 229 teachers (79 female; 159 PhDs; 33 full professors) participated with 387 courses while 10,296 students assessed
the humor in these courses. Study 2 used a similar design for 45 teachers (20 female; 27 PhDs, 9 full professors), 116 course sessions, and
2,333 student assessments. Three-level-analyses pointed to substantial variance in students’ assessments of content-related humor which could
be attributed to differences between courses/sessions within teachers (ICC = .12–.13) and between teachers themselves (ICC = .21). In both studies, performance (appearance component) avoidance goals emerged as negative predictors, and relational goals and self-efficacy as positive predictors of content-related humor, highlighting the relevance of instructors’ motivations for the use of instructional humor.

The impact of teacher humour on teaching quality and student learning: An experimental approach.

Bieg, S., Banaruee, H. & Dresel, M. (2026). The impact of teacher humour on teaching quality and student learning: An experimental approach. Learning and Instruction, 2026(102).

Abstract
Background: It is assumed that teacher humour promotes social relationships and enhances learning processes among students. Nonetheless, there has been no systematic investigation beyond correlational studies into how different types of humour influence distinct dimensions of teaching quality and students’ learning processes.
Aims: We used an experimental approach in two studies to examine the impact of various types of teacher humour on experts’ ratings and students’ perceptions of teaching quality, as well as on students’ motivation and emotions.
Samples: Study 1 included 206 experts and Study 2 included 325 students.
Methods: In both studies, participants were randomly assigned to one of five experimental groups, in which they were shown video recordings of lessons that were identical in content but differed in terms of the humour used by the teacher. Subsequently, the participants rated the teaching quality of this lesson (teacher-student relationship, interestingness, clarity, time on task). In Study 2, students additionally reported on their motivation and their emotions while watching the video-recorded lesson.
Results: In both studies, results revealed that course-related humour promotes teacher-student relationship and interestingness (no effects were observed for clarity and time on task). Moreover, course-related humour led to increased intrinsic motivation, enjoyment and reduced negative emotions in students. Structural equation modelling revealed indirect effects of different types of humour on students’ motivation and emotions via teaching quality.
Conclusions: Our findings indicate that humour that is course-related can improve socio-emotional and motivational dimensions of teaching quality and enhance students’ intrinsic motivation and emotional experiences.

Überlegungen zum Frieden

Lang-Wojtasik, G. & Berndt, C. (2025). Überlegungen zum Frieden. Zeitschrift für internationale Bildungsforschung und Entwicklungspädagogik, 48(3), 25-28.
