Abstract
This paper presents findings from a research project investigating the application of Augmented Reality (AR) technology to enhance numerical understanding in primary education. We developed and evaluated “AR Number Line”, an application that projects a virtual number line into the physical environment, allowing students to navigatethrough space along the number line and mark numbers. This study follows a Design-Based Research approach with multiple iterations of development, testing, and refinement. Results from a sample of 35 fourth-grade students demonstrated significant learning gains in both the AR and functionally equivalent non-AR versions working with number estimation tasks. While both versions effectively supported learning, the AR version offered unique embodied learning experiences through physical movement along the number line, though with increased extraneous cognitive load.
