Abstract
The present study focuses on introjected regulation within Self-Determination Theory which describes behavioral reasons to promote ego involvement with a focus on approval from the self and others. Previous studies have shown that a distinction between approach and avoidance within introjected regulation show differentiated correlations to identified regulation, well-being and negative affect. But studies which consider the approval from others within introjection do not exist so far. The aim of this study is to investigate if there are four factors of introjection representing the approach/avoidance component and the approval of self and others.
We conducted our study with a sample from different universities from Germany and Austria which consisted of 409 students. Results of confirmatory factor analyses show that a 4-factor model of motivation with one factor for introjected regulation does not confirm the data. However, a model with four aspects for introjected regulation fits the data well (χ² =352.31; df = 149; p < .000; CFI = .940; TLI = .924; RMSEA = .058, SRMR = .048). Furthermore, structural equation modeling revealed that introjected avoidance regulation with focus on self and others as well as introjected approach regulation with focus on others are negative predictors for self-efficacy, well-being and anxiety whereas introjected approach regulation with focus on self is a positive predictor for well-being.
The results show that it is helpful to differentiate in four types of introjection to evaluate the quality of motivation more reliable.
